Black Sabbath aimed to orchestrate the most outstanding metal concert of all time, raking in £140 million for charity during the Back to The Beginning mega-event.
In a spectacular event that brought together some of the biggest names in heavy metal, the 'Back To The Beginning' concert, held at Birmingham's Villa Park on July 5, was an unprecedented success. The star-studded gig, over a year of hard work for musical director Tom Morello, featured performances from bands like Metallica, Guns 'N Roses, and Aerosmith, who each added Black Sabbath covers to their sets.
Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, led the band through four songs for their final gig, and five further hits alongside his own solo band. Expressing his feelings about performing, Ozzy stated that he had been laid up for six years and that he had no idea how he felt.
Tom Morello, a guitarist for Audioslave and Rage Against the Machine, expressed gratitude to Ozzy for trusting him to be the Musical Director of the show. Other bands involved in the supergroups at the gig included The Smashing Pumpkins, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Living Colour, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a guest appearance by Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones.
Rage Against The Machine was one of the bands involved in various mash-up slick supergroups at the gig. The event, which celebrated the roots of heavy metal, saw many musicians, bands, and fans paying tribute to the ALL TIME greats.
In a heartwarming gesture, all profits from the gig will be equally split between Birmingham Children's Hospital, Cure Parkinson's, and Midlands-based Acorns Children's Hospice. Birmingham Children's Hospital is planning to use the funds for improvements in emergency departments, entertainment activities for children, a new cinema, and equipment.
Tom Morello announced the charitable donation on Instagram, stating that the event had raised a staggering £140 million for local charities. However, the search results do not provide information on who transferred the donations from the 'Back To The Beginning' concert to local charities.
Heavy metal was the music that made Tom Morello love music. The event was a testament to the enduring power of this genre and its ability to bring people together for a noble cause. As the dust settles on this historic concert, the impact of the funds raised will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
