BMW's New Class future is now upon us with the iX3, and its price is causing waves that threaten to topple competitors.
BMW Unveils the Electric iX3: A Leap into the Future of Mobility
BMW has taken a significant step forward in its electric vehicle (EV) journey with the unveiling of the new iX3. The iX3, BMW's first production EV to ride on the Neue Klasse platform, is set to revolutionise the premium electric SUV segment.
Measuring 188.3 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, and 64.4 inches tall with a 114.1-inch wheelbase, the iX3 offers generous cargo space. Behind the rear seats, you'll find 30.4 cubic feet, and with the seats folded, this expands to a spacious 65 cubic feet.
The iX3's profile is defined by rectangular contours and crisp character lines, while its rear features horizontally arranged taillights. The front of the vehicle showcases the front vertical kidney grille and twin headlight setup, inspired by classic BMWs.
Under the hood, the iX3 uses dual electric motors with all-wheel drive, delivering 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse propels the iX3 to impressive speeds, making it a formidable competitor in the premium electric SUV market.
One of the most intriguing features of the iX3 is its digital nervous system, which consists of four high-performance computers, or "superbrains." Each superbrain controls a specific function: driving dynamics, automated driving systems, infotainment, and basic functions.
The iX3 is also a software-defined vehicle, meaning it will keep improving throughout its lifecycle with over-the-air updates. This ensures that the iX3 remains at the cutting edge of technology.
In terms of design, the iX3 introduces a new styling language that will be applied across BMW's entire lineup. The interior features BMW's new Panoramic iDrive, a sweeping pillar-to-pillar display.
The iX3 offers a range of optional features, including a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, panoramic moonroof, and three-zone auto climate control.
The iX3 will compete with premium electric SUVs like the Audi Q6 e-tron, Porsche Macan EV, Mercedes GLC EV, and Volvo EX60. Interestingly, the iX3's starting price is expected to be around $60,000, undercutting the X3 M50 xDrive by roughly $6,000.
The iX3's release in the USA is planned for 2026. Production for US models will begin in the first quarter of 2026 at BMW's new plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The iX3 will be available in Europe starting spring 2026 and marks BMW's shift to the Neue Klasse electric platform.
By 2027, BMW expects nearly 40 new or refreshed vehicles to adopt the Neue Klasse technology, including a four-door sedan positioned as the electric counterpart to the 3-Series. This move signifies BMW's commitment to a sustainable and electric future.
The iX3 can gain 230 miles of range in 10 minutes with 400 kW DC fast charging, or recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes. The iX3 50 xDrive arrives in the US in mid-2026 with 463 hp and a 400-mile range.
The iX3 introduces new driving sounds and sound effects from the BMW HypersonX soundscape, enhancing the driving experience. With the iX3, BMW is not just building cars; they are crafting the future of mobility.
