Bochum city achieves solar power growth milestone in its solar expansion mission
The city of Bochum is making a strong statement for climate protection with its continued expansion of solar energy. This year, the city, in partnership with the municipal utility company Bochum, has installed 14 new photovoltaic systems on municipal buildings, adding a total capacity of approximately 1,900 kWp.
Dr. Eva-Maria Hubbert, the responsible executive of the city of Bochum, has expressed satisfaction with the continuous progress of the 'Mission Solar'. Marc Vogel, head of energy services at the municipal utility company Bochum, made this summary. The use of solar power in Bochum's projects not only contributes to climate protection but also saves money.
One of the most significant upcoming projects is the Lohrheidestadion photovoltaic system, scheduled to begin installation in Q4 2025. This project will be the largest PV single system in Bochum with a planned capacity of over 900 kWp, making it the city's largest solar project to date.
The amount of electricity generated by Bochum's photovoltaic projects is sufficient to supply around 840 households with electricity for a year. The electricity generated by the systems is initially used for self-consumption by the respective property, and any excess energy is fed into the public power grid.
The Lohrheidestadion project will contribute to Bochum's ongoing efforts in expanding solar energy. Among the largest projects implemented this year are photovoltaic systems on the Heinrich-Böll Comprehensive School, the administrative building at Universitätsstraße 43-49, the vocational college at Karl-Friedrich-Straße, and the parking garage of the Quartiersgarage Feldmark. The total capacity of the city of Bochum's photovoltaic projects will increase to around 3,250 kWp after the systems installed this year.
The potential of using communal roofs for solar power generation is clearly demonstrated in Bochum's projects. As the city continues to invest in solar energy, it sets an example for other cities in promoting sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions. The installation of the photovoltaic system at Lohrheidestadion will begin in autumn 2025, marking another milestone in Bochum's commitment to climate protection and renewable energy.
