Border Control Operations in NRW: Federal Police Carry Out Warranted Arrests
On August 7, 2025, two foreign nationals were arrested at different locations in Germany, following routine checks by the Federal Police.
At Gronau train station, a 59-year-old Lithuanian was stopped. The individual was wanted for theft and aggravated theft, according to police databases, and owed a total of 4000 euros in fines or faced a 133-day prison sentence. The Lithuanian was found to have two arrest warrants issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Oldenburg for these offenses.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old Hungarian was stopped at a border control on the A52 from the Netherlands. A data check revealed two arrest notices against the Hungarian. One was from the Public Prosecutor's Office I in Munich for violating the Anti-Doping Act, for which the Hungarian faced a fine of 2640 euros or a 66-day prison sentence. The other was from the Public Prosecutor's Office in Dresden for driving without a license, for which the Hungarian faced a fine of 450 euros or a 30-day prison sentence.
The Hungarian, who presented a valid Hungarian identity card for control, was arrested on the spot and taken to the Federal Police Station in Kempen for further processing. After payment of the required amount of 3090 euros, the Hungarian was allowed to continue his journey after completion of the police measures.
In contrast, the Lithuanian was arrested on the spot and taken to the prison in MΓΌnster to serve his sentence, as he could not pay the fine.
The temporary border controls at all land-based Schengen internal borders, reintroduced by the Federal Police on September 16, 2024, at the order of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, played a crucial role in these arrests.
