Boxing match between Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman, contending for the 154-pound championship, scheduled in Las Vegas for October this year.
Keith Thurman, the former unified welterweight champion, is set to challenge Sebastian Fundora for the WBC junior middleweight title on October 25. The announcement was made by Premier Boxing Champions on Friday afternoon.
Thurman, who held the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles at welterweight in 2017, will be stepping up two weight classes for this fight. His last victory was against Brock Jarvis in March 2023, and before that, he defeated Mario Barrios in February 2022. However, Thurman has been dealing with ring rust before his fight with Fundora, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-5.
Fundora, on the other hand, has been impressing the boxing world with his recent performances. His last fight was an emphatic win against Tim Tszyu in July, where he narrowly won the first fight against Tszyu to capture the WBC and WBO titles. Fundora has begun to utilize his jab more in recent fights, forcing opponents to work their way inside.
The challenge for Thurman will be significant due to Fundora's height and weight class. At 154 pounds, Fundora presents problems for opponents, as he uses his reach advantage to keep them at bay. Thurman, who lost to Manny Pacquiao in a split decision in July 2019, will need to adapt to Fundora's style to secure a victory.
The first fight between Fundora and Tszyu was impacted by a cut Tszyu suffered early on, caused by an accidental elbow from Fundora. In the rematch, Fundora dropped Tszyu in the opening round and dominated the fight until Tszyu retired in his corner after the seventh round.
Thurman's most notable victory was against Danny Garcia to claim the WBC title in 2017. However, he will be facing a much different challenge in Fundora, who is undefeated in his professional career.
The fight between Thurman and Fundora promises to be an exciting one, with both boxers bringing their A-game to the ring. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if Thurman can pull off an upset or if Fundora will continue his winning streak.
