Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli is set to return to the Groupama Stadium this Sunday evening, the scene of his past exploits. Last year, Rulli played a pivotal role in Marseille's victory over Lyon, saving a penalty and being hailed as the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 at the time.

However, Rulli's confidence has been shaken this season. An altercation at Roazhon Park on August 15 and a less-than-impressive performance in a recent match against Rennes have taken a toll on his morale. Yet, Rulli seems to be on the path to redemption, having regained his confidence following Marseille's victory against Paris FC (5-2, last Saturday).

Manager Ioannis De Zerbi has been a source of support for Rulli throughout this challenging period. Despite De Zerbi's volatile affection for some of his players, he maintains a strong bond with Rulli. De Zerbi has asked Rulli to keep learning, play, and sometimes perform miracles like he did last season.

The goal conceded at the very end of the match against Rennes was not solely Rulli's fault. Numerous defensive errors led to the opportunity for the opposition to score. Ulisses Garcia, for instance, failed to follow Ludovic Blas, allowing the attacker an unguarded path to the goal. Quentin Merlin, the ball carrier, was not attacked during the goal, further highlighting the defensive lapses.

Rulli's error in Lille on May 4 was not a technical one but a strategic one. De Zerbi criticised Rulli for not making one more pass to secure the ball, a decision that ultimately cost Marseille a crucial point. However, De Zerbi has been quick to protect Rulli, shielding him from harsh criticism after a less flashy second half of the season and a mistake.

Despite these setbacks, De Zerbi believes in Rulli's exceptional talent. He has expressed his support for the goalkeeper, stating that Rulli's role as a relay for De Zerbi is crucial, especially in the upcoming Champions League matches. Rulli knows he will have to raise his level of impermeability in Ligue 1 and the Champions League in the future.

As Rulli steps onto the Groupama Stadium pitch this Sunday, he will be reminded of his past triumphs and the expectations that come with his role as Marseille's first line of defense. With De Zerbi's support and his own determination, Rulli is poised to write a new chapter in his Marseille story.
