Brexit Statement Issued by WTTC on 24th December, 2020

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has welcomed the agreement between the EU and UK governments to avoid a no-deal Brexit, as stated by WTTC President and CEO, Gloria Guevara. This development is expected to bring a sigh of relief to the Travel & Tourism sector, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deal, agreed upon at the 11th hour, allows for the sector to look ahead to 2021 with more confidence. However, the exact details of the agreement are yet to be revealed, and its true consequences for travellers remain uncertain.

British holidaymakers could potentially face higher health costs and added red tape due to the deal. The suggested testing regime, aimed at preventing further setbacks to the sector's economic recovery, is a key aspect of the agreement. WTTC advocates for the end of quarantines and damaging travel restrictions, and suggests replacing them with a comprehensive, quick turnaround testing regime on departure.

WTTC believes that this is the only way for the Travel & Tourism sector to survive and recover. The organization is prepared to collaborate with governments and key organizations in the Travel & Tourism sector to implement testing and WTTC Safe Travels protocols.

The sector is critical not only to the UK economy but also to the global economy. WTTC's focus is on ensuring the swift implementation of these measures to support the sector's recovery. The sector previously feared the consequences of a no-deal Brexit, and the agreement provides a glimmer of hope.

However, the consequences of the deal for the Travel & Tourism sector are still uncertain. WTTC remains vigilant, advocating against damaging travel restrictions that could hinder the sector's recovery. The organization, under the leadership of Gloria Guevara, is ready to work closely with governments and key travel and tourism entities to implement these measures and support the sector's recovery.
