Bridge design adjustments needed for tension adjustments

The Carolabridge in Dresden, a vital part of the city's traffic network, will be closed to buses with a permissible total weight of more than 16 tons from February 28, 2025, following its collapse on September 11, 2024.

The decision to close the bridge was urgently recommended by the responsible expert during the last bridge inspection. This closure is not due to the current condition of the bridge structure, but serves to ensure its long-term preservation.

For decades, the weight limit for vehicles on the Carolabridge has been 16 tons. Despite this, a recent review revealed that city buses now exceed this limit, especially when fully occupied.

The K-lines of the Passau Transport Operations Company mbH and the shuttle bus to the Veste Oberhaus will continue to run via the old town and the suspension bridge. However, the affected buses will now cross the Schanzl bridge and Anger street, with stops at "Suspension Bridge" (for RBO buses) and "Ilz Bridge/Near Salvator Church" (for city buses) in the city center direction, and at "Suspension Bridge" Anger in the outskirts direction.

The Passau Transport Operations Company mbH and the RBO's city bus lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 6101, 6102, 6103, 6130, 6131, 6134, 6135, 6226, 6380, 7599, and the night express will be rerouted due to the closure of the Carolabridge. The city bus will remain unchanged.

"Parent taxis" will no longer be able to use the "Suspension Bridge" and "Ilz Bridge" stops, but short stopping possibilities exist at the BschĂŒtt parking garage.

The Carolabridge is one of the 73 bridges in Passau, including the Franz-Josef-Strauß Bridge, Marien Bridge, Schanzl Bridge, Hanging Bridge, which play a crucial role in the city's traffic network. These bridges are inspected annually for defects and undergo more comprehensive inspections every 3 or 6 years.

A recalculation of the load-bearing capacity of the Carolabridge is being carried out by a commissioned engineering office to determine if it can be classified in a higher load class. The company appointed to carry out this task is BauingenieurbĂŒro BPR GmbH.

The Hanging Bridge was reopened in 2018 after extensive renovation for traffic, costing a total of 4.3 million euros. However, a reinforcement of the supporting cables was not possible at that time due to the unique design.

These measures aim to ensure the safety and longevity of the Carolabridge, a significant landmark in Dresden. Passengers are advised to plan their travels accordingly during this period of change.
