In a pressing concern for low-income earners, single parents, and elderly people with small pensions, the ParitΓ€tischer Association is urging the future federal government to implement a radical shift in rent and housing policy. The Association's managing director, Ulrich Schneider, made a statement to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, highlighting the need for effective rent control, protection against displacement for social institutions, and a strong non-profit housing market.

Schneider's statement comes amidst growing concerns about the lack of affordable housing, a problem that has become a major social question, according to Verena Bentele, the president of VdK. High rents have become a real poverty risk and an existential threat, particularly for single parents, people with disabilities, and the elderly with small pensions.

The Association considers the socialization of residential property as a constitutional means to counteract skyrocketing rent increases. This perspective is echoed in the winning initiative of the referendum on the socialization of large real estate companies in Berlin, called "Deutsche Wohnen enteignen" (Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen).

In cities, there is less and less space for welfare institutions, with small kindergartens often being replaced by trendy cafΓ©s. This situation has led to a great need for action on the rental market, as Bentele points out. She believes there is an urgent need for a change in thinking in housing policy, with the person being at the center instead of profit.

The lack of affordable and barrier-free housing, and the problems that arise for members from this, is a major topic in VdK legal advice. The Association is advocating for a new rent policy that prioritizes the needs of individuals over corporate profits.

On Sunday, a referendum will be held in Berlin regarding the socialization of large real estate companies with more than 3,000 apartments. The outcome of this referendum could mark a significant step towards addressing the housing crisis in Germany and ensuring a more equitable distribution of housing resources.
