Building in City Centre of Nice Ablaze on Sunday Evening: Structure Previously Occupied Seems to Have Been Squatted by Flames
Fire Engulfs Abandoned Building in Nice, France
A fire broke out in an abandoned building in Nice, France, on Sunday evening, quickly engulfing the structure in flames. The building, known as Nouvelle Fenêtre, is located in a residential neighbourhood near the railway.
Lieutenant Xavier Bossi of the SDIS Alpes-Maritimes provided details about the incident. He confirmed that the building was a former squat, with a mixed structure of concrete and wood, spanning approximately 500 m2.
When the first responders arrived, the fire was already well established, with flames reaching impressive heights and filling the air with thick black smoke visible for several kilometers around. The heat from the fire was so intense that it could be felt from several houses away, including by Carmen, a resident, who watched the building go up in smoke from her balcony with her husband.
Seventeen firefighters were mobilized to combat the fire, and within less than two hours, the flames were brought under control. Tragically, despite the quick response, the structure's floor collapsed during the fire. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the building.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as the investigation continues. The fire department is working diligently to determine how the fire started and to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
The community is left in shock after witnessing the intense fire in their neighbourhood. As the investigation continues, residents can only hope for answers and a way to prevent such incidents from happening again.
