Building on her victories, women's champion Shiina Okamoto plans to amplify her strength further. What's in store for this tenacious athlete next?

Shiina Okamoto, the Tokyo-born poker sensation, has made headlines yet again. After her historic win at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) $1,000 Ladies Championship in 2023, Okamoto has continued her dominance, securing a second consecutive victory in 2024 and 2025, making her the first player to achieve this feat[1][2].

Okamoto's prowess in the game is evident, with her impressive live results showcasing her rapid ascent into world-class poker. Her performances have earned her substantial prize winnings and multiple final table appearances at prestigious events[1].

Away from the poker table, Okamoto enjoys the balance between skill and luck that the game offers. She finds inspiration in watching fellow player Kristen Foxen and grew up honing her strategic thinking skills through the board game Catan.

Okamoto's journey into poker began five years ago as a hobby, but it quickly became her passion. As she prepares for her next challenge, a Sit & Go tournament on ABEMA, a popular Japanese streaming service, on July 14, she encourages players to manage their mental state and find what helps them feel their best[3].

Okamoto believes that women tend to be more emotionally driven and have less mental resilience compared to men in poker. However, she believes her ability to read women's emotions and influence decision-making contributes to her success in women's events. Okamoto seeks emotional support from friends during breaks to boost her confidence and stay calm. She reminds herself not to become overly emotional about individual hands during tournaments.

In the 2023 WSOP Ladies Championship, Okamoto was the chipleader during the final table and expressed humility and gratitude after her win. Heather Alcorn finished second in the same event. Okamoto's parents were initially upset but are now happy with her decision to pursue a career in poker.

Okamoto prefers playing tournaments over cash games and was invited to visit the WSOP Legends Lounge for an interview. As she gears up for her upcoming tournament, Okamoto doesn't have a specific career goal in poker yet, but her continued success suggests that she will undoubtedly continue to make waves in the poker world.
