Bundesliga kicks off with Cologne denying Freiburg a winning start
FC Köln Secures Impressive 4-1 Victory Over SC Freiburg
In a thrilling encounter at the sold-out Cologne stadium, 1. FC Köln outshone SC Freiburg, securing a 4-1 victory. The match, played with Köln coaching in a black away jersey and defending with a back four, marked a significant milestone for the team as they achieved two victories in the first two Bundesliga matchdays for the first time in 20 years.
The atmosphere in the stadium was unusually subdued before the match due to the announcement of FC Bayern Munich as the opponent in the second round of the cup. However, the Cologne anthem "Wenn et Trömmelche jeit" was played again after the restart, setting the tone for an exciting game.
Just ten minutes into the match, Jan Thielmann scored clinically into the bottom right corner from a sharp cross by Marius Bülter, giving Köln an early lead. The goal was a testament to Bülter's precision and Thielmann's finishing skills, as the new signing for Köln was already involved in the action.
Shortly after, Bülter provided another assist, this time for Jakub Kaminski who scored his first FC goal for Köln from a long cross, putting the home team two up. The crowd erupted in applause, sensing that this could be a special day for the team.
Kristoffer Lund, Jan Thielmann, and Denis Huseinbasic had chances for Köln but were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Freiburg, under coach Julian Schuster, remained resilient, seeking a goal to get back into the game. However, it was Köln who extended their lead when substitute Said El Mala scored from outside the box to make it 3-0.
Freiburg finally found the back of the net through Maximilian Eggestein, but it was a consolation goal, coming late in the game and not affecting the final score. Köln put the game to bed with El Mala's goal, climbing to third place in the Bundesliga.
The match was not without its dramatic moments. Atubolu made a fantastic save to prevent Kaminski from making it 4-0 for Köln, while Marvin Schwäbe made a great save to deny Lucas Höler's shot for Freiburg. Bülter capped off his impressive performance by scoring the fourth goal for Köln, heading in from a precise cross by Thielmann after the restart.
With this win, 1. FC Köln won its second Bundesliga match of the season, defeating SC Freiburg 4-1. The team will look to carry this momentum into their next match, aiming to continue their impressive start to the season.
