BYD Expands Global Presence with New Plants and Vessels

Chinese electric vehicle maker, BYD, is making strides in its global expansion, with several significant projects underway.

In a move to strengthen its international presence, BYD signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hyundai Glovis last October, aiming to share vessel capacity for deep-sea finished vehicle shipments between China and BYD's export markets. This partnership comes as BYD prepares to complete a $1 billion plant in Subang, West Java, Indonesia by the end of this year.

The new plant in Indonesia will initially supply the domestic market, but it will also produce vehicles for export markets in the long term. With an annual capacity for 150,000 vehicles, the plant is expected to bolster BYD's production capabilities.

BYD's commitment to the Indonesia project allows the company to temporarily export vehicles without paying duties. Currently, BYD exports the Seal, Atto, Dolphin, and M6 models to Indonesia from China.

In Europe, BYD will use the Hefei, its LNG-powered vessel with capacity for 5,000 vehicles, to export new energy vehicles. The Hefei was launched in January, marking another milestone in BYD's shipping expansion.

Meanwhile, work on BYD's plant in Brazil was suspended in December 2021 due to degrading construction conditions. The construction company responsible for setting up the factory in Camaçari, Brazil, is not specified in the available information, and there is no publicly stated reason for the construction halt. The factory was announced in 2023 with production initially planned for 2025 but later postponed to December 2026.

BYD is also due to complete work on a factory in Hungary in 2025. The company has already made its mark in Indonesia, becoming the leading electric vehicle maker as of last year, selling 15,400 electric vehicles in the country last year.

BYD has also cut ties with the construction firm Jinjiang Construction Brazil, but details about the reasons behind this decision are not publicly available.

As BYD continues to expand its global footprint, it is clear that the company is committed to delivering high-quality electric vehicles to markets around the world.
