Cal Raleigh Breaks Home Run Record for Catchers

Cal Raleigh, the Seattle Mariners' catcher, has made history by becoming the first American League catcher since Thurman Munson to have consecutive seasons with over 100 RBIs. This achievement was highlighted in an 11-4 victory over the Athletics, where Raleigh hit three home runs, bringing his season total to 49.

Raleigh's home runs on Sunday have not only secured his place in the record books but also put him in a strong position to break Griffey's franchise record of 56 home runs in a single season, with 31 games still left in the season.

The 28-year-old Raleigh, who was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time this year, has been impressing fans and analysts alike with his consistent performance. He has driven in 104 runs this season and finished the game against the Athletics with four RBIs, having five at-bats.

Raleigh's 48th and 49th home runs set a new record for a catcher in a single season, surpassing the previous record held by Salvador Perez. His 49th home run was a 412-foot hit, while his 48th, a 448-foot blast, was his longest as a right-handed hitter.

Raleigh joins an exclusive club of four players in Major League history who have hit at least 40 home runs in a season while primarily playing catcher. These players are Johnny Bench, Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley, and Mike Piazza, all of whom are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In addition to his impressive home run total, Raleigh also made history as the second Mariner to win the Home Run Derby, following Ken Griffey Jr., and as the first switch-hitter and the first catcher to win the title.

With his record-breaking performance, Cal Raleigh has undoubtedly established himself as one of the most formidable catchers in the league, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see if he can continue his impressive form in the remaining games of the season.
