Captured Mexican soccer player Alan Pulido has been liberated following a struggle with his abductor
Alan Pulido, the Mexican footballer who plays for Greek giants Olympiakos, was rescued in a dramatic operation in Tamaulipas, Mexico, on May 29. The operation resulted in the arrest of one suspect, who is believed to be associated with the Gulf Cartel and the notorious gang Los Metros in Ciudad Victoria.
The kidnapping occurred on May 28, as Pulido was returning from a party with his girlfriend. The suspect, who hails from the neighboring state of Veracruz, is said to be a member of one of the gangs operating in Ciudad Victoria, according to Quintanilla.
During the kidnapping, Pulido was taken to a two-story house. No violence occurred during the operation, as stated by Federal police chief Enrique Galindo. Interestingly, the woman accompanying Pulido was allowed to leave during the kidnapping.
The kidnappers called Pulido's family twice to demand a ransom, but no ransom was paid. Despite their belief that they could have made a "nice profit," the kidnappers did not receive any money.
Pulido sustained an injury to his right wrist during his escape attempt. He was later rescued after fighting one of his kidnappers and calling the police with the kidnapper's phone. The dramatic rescue is considered a major success for the authorities in Tamaulipas.
Pulido appeared at a news conference with a bandage around his right hand, expressing gratitude for the prayers and support he received during the difficult times. Olympiakos also expressed their concern and gratitude for Pulido, with the club thanking everyone for their prayers and well wishes.
Tamaulipas has been plagued by violence and drug cartel activity for years. More than 5,500 people have disappeared in Tamaulipas, out of a total of around 28,000 reported missing across Mexico. Some Tamaulipas roads are so dangerous that the federal police sometimes escort travelers in protective convoys.
Alan Pulido, 33, plays for Olympiakos and was part of Mexico's 2014 World Cup squad. He played in the Greek Cup final on May 17 and signed a 4-year contract with Olympiakos last season. The football community and fans worldwide are relieved to hear of Pulido's safe return.
