Rockfall Claims Lives on RN 205 Near Passy
A tragic incident occurred on the RN 205 between Chamonix and Passy on August 20, 2021, as a landslide took place at 6 PM on the descent of Les Egratz. The incident resulted in the loss of life and injuries for four individuals, all members of the same family.
According to MΓ©tΓ©o France, the rain intensities during the incident were not deemed exceptional, with 25 mm of rain falling in the Passy area in 24 hours, and 13 to 15 mm in an hour, between 6 PM and 7 PM.
The family was vacationing in Combloux, a neighboring commune, at the time of the incident. The man, aged 54, and his wife were injured in the rockfall. The man is reported to be seriously injured, while the woman's injuries are less severe.
The two fatalities were a 23-year-old son and his girlfriend. Their identities, along with the rest of the family, have not been disclosed in the available search results.
Upon the incident, the departmental crisis operations center was activated by the prefecture, and around forty firefighters were mobilized to secure the landslide area. The RN 205 was closed in the direction of Geneva/MΓ’con at the accident site to allow emergency services to intervene.
The national road has since been reopened, and access to the Mont Blanc tunnel is again possible since 10:30 PM from Italy for heavy goods vehicles. The injured individuals are currently hospitalized in Annecy and Sallanches respectively.
