Lower Car Insurance Premiums for Certain Professions in the UK

A new study by Quotezone, a leading insurance comparison service, has revealed that certain professions in the UK are enjoying lower car insurance premiums compared to the national average. The data, which compares year on year statistics from 2024 and 2025, shows that civil servants, teachers, HGV drivers, and administration assistants are among the professions with the lowest car insurance premiums.

The study found that civil servants pay the least, with premiums around £495, which is about 25% lower than the national average of £664. Teachers typically pay about £532, around 20% less than average, and HGV drivers around £556, about 16% less than average. Administration assistants pay slightly less than the average at about £663.

The primary reason these professions have lower premiums is that insurers view them as low-risk drivers. This perception stems from the nature of their work, which usually involves structured roles, regular working hours, and less risky driving behaviour. For example, civil servants and teachers may have more predictable schedules and less stressful driving conditions, reducing the chance of accidents or claims. HGV drivers are considered lower risk because they undergo extensive training and certification, and they spend more hours driving company vehicles rather than personal cars, implying better experience and safer driving habits.

For van insurance, which can be related to professions where driving is part of the job, handymen, painters, gardeners, dog groomers, and cleaners frequently get the cheapest premiums. This is because their work usually involves lower mileage, fewer stops, non-urgent trips, secure tool storage, and generally predictable, local driving — all factors that insurers associate with reduced risk.

The study also found that unemployed drivers are quoted almost twice as much on average at £1,265. Healthcare assistants and warehouse workers face car insurance premiums above £1,000. In 2025, unemployed drivers are the most expensive to insure with premiums over £1,200 on average.

The car insurance experts at Quotezone say slight changes in job title wording can impact insurance pricing. There is a suggestion that the job risk categories used by insurers need to be updated for the 21st century. Quotezone has provided data suggesting that new driver premiums might have peaked. The company assists over 4 million customers every year and has a data sample that includes over 100,000 car insurance policies and looks at the top 20 most popular jobs.
