MTV VMAs 2025: A Night of Controversy and Surprises

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held in Elmont, New York, on September 7, 2025, was a night filled with unexpected moments and spirited debates among netizens.

One of the most talked-about instances was YUNGBLUD's bold fashion choice on the red carpet. The musician, known for his unconventional style, wore leather pants and a matching jacket, with no shirt or top underneath, causing a division among netizens. Some supported his choice, while others called it "tasteless." YUNGBLUD further stirred the pot by ditching his jacket, revealing a noticeable bush of hair growing on his chest and, later, his pubic hair while flaunting his low-rise pants.

Another controversial performance of the night was delivered by Sabrina Carpenter. She advocated for the rights of the trans community during her provocative live performance of her latest single, "Tears." Accompanied by drag queens and trans rights signs, Carpenter's performance sparked a wave of backlash online, with critics accusing her of staging "campaign rallies" and "fetishizing" the community.

The KATSEYE girls also made headlines when they received custom Labubu dolls on the red carpet. However, netizens commented that the girls did not appear enthusiastic about the gift. One of the KATSEYE girls, Manon, was even caught on camera trying to suppress a laugh while receiving her doll.

Frankie Grande made a disgusted expression and shook his head during Tate McRae's performance. Social media users suspected Frankie was "jealous" and acting "shady" toward McRae. Meanwhile, Doja Cat reapplied her red lipstick on the red carpet and took a big bite of it, nearly eating the entire thing.

In a more positive note, Mariah Carey received her first-ever VMA as she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, despite being in the music industry for 35 years and having won six Grammys. However, her performance was criticized for being lackluster and "boring."

Lady Gaga did not perform live at the VMAs; instead, she pre-recorded her performance. Ariana Grande found it difficult to position her mouth properly near the mic during her acceptance speech, leaving it awkwardly placed around her eyes.

Despite the controversies, the MTV VMAs 2025 was an eventful night, with each performance and red carpet appearance generating lively discussions among netizens.
