Audi to Introduce New Software-Defined Cars in 2028 with Rivian Technology

Audi is set to revolutionise its car production with the introduction of new software-defined vehicles, developed in partnership with Rivian, starting from 2028. This move is part of Audi's renewed focus on traditional physical controls for greater usability, as demonstrated by the new Concept C show car.

The collaboration between Audi and Rivian began last year with the establishment of a software joint venture by the Volkswagen Group. The new software-defined architecture is expected to reduce complexity in developing Audi cars, leading to leaner and faster processes.

The Volkswagen ID 1, launching in 2027, will be the first VW Group production car to use Rivian elements. Audi will follow suit, with the first cars with the new technology already on their way.

In 2028, Audi will present two vehicles powered by Rivian's software architecture. One of these vehicles will be in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, though the exact models and segments have not been explicitly detailed in available sources.

Over-the-air updates are an integral part of Audi's strategy with the new software stack, making the cars more flexible for adding functionality or fixing imperfections. This technology is expected to have significant implications for the production and capabilities of next-generation Audi models.

Audi's CEO, Gernot Döllner, stated that Audi has the highest requirements when it comes to functionality. The new software stack is expected to help Audi focus its organisation, leading to clearer and simpler operations.

Audi and Rivian are heavily working on the new technology, building up mules and working intensively together. The first car from Audi on the VW Group's new 'SSP' modular architecture, likely launching around 2028, could be a candidate for the new software stack.

The new software technology developed with Rivian will be rolled out step-by-step, starting from two models and gradually expanding to the complete Audi line-up. These new cars from Audi will occupy different market segments.

Audi will be the first brand from the VW Group to bring a car to market with a complete software architecture developed in partnership with Rivian. This marks a significant step forward for Audi as it strives to stay at the forefront of automotive innovation.
