Catastrophic Accident at Riderman Biking Competition: Approximately 70 Victims Reported Injured
In a shocking turn of events, a mass accident occurred during the 25th edition of the popular "Riderman" cycling race in southern Germany. The incident took place on the K5705 road between Bad Dürrheim and Biesingen, under the A864 highway overpass.
Organised by Rik Sauser, who has been running the event alongside his brother Kai since 2000, the "Riderman" attracts hundreds of participants each year. This year, 1,079 riders took part in the event.
The tragedy unfolded in a left-hand curve, where too many riders attempted to navigate at the same time, causing uncontrollable crashes. As a result, a pile-up of riders occurred near the initial crash site, leading to a mass crash involving approximately 70 participants.
Four helicopters and numerous ambulances were dispatched to the scene to tend to the injured. Up to 20 participants were severely injured, with another 25 sustaining minor injuries. These injured riders were treated on-site and taken to hospitals for further care.
Another approximately 35 racers also sustained minor injuries in the incident. In a precautionary measure, the organiser cancelled all remaining events following the accidents. The ongoing races were stopped and ended due to the incidents.
The "Rideman" is renowned as one of the most popular amateur cycling races in southern Germany. Despite all safety measures, the risk of falling is inherent to cycling, the organisers noted. This marks the first time such an accident has occurred in the history of the "Riderman" event.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this unfortunate incident. The organisers are currently investigating the cause of the accident and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
