Catastrophic Earthquake in Afghanistan: Death Toll Rises Above 2,200

In the troubled region of southeastern Afghanistan, another major earthquake has shaken the area, marking the third such incident in less than a week. This latest earthquake, a magnitude 6.2 tremor that occurred on Thursday night, has further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The epicentre of the latest earthquake was in Kunar Province, a region that has already been heavily affected by the two previous quakes. The initial earthquake, a 6.0-magnitude quake that struck on Sunday, has left nearly 98% of buildings in Kunar Province damaged or destroyed.

Rescue operations have been ongoing in the region, reaching remote villages in Kunar Province. However, the ongoing conflict, security issues, logistical challenges, and restricted access have limited the involvement of organisations like the Red Cross, UNICEF, and Médecins Sans Frontières, which have significantly contributed to aid in Afghanistan's eastern provinces in recent weeks.

Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to reach the affected villages, some of which can only be accessed on foot or via helicopter. The situation in the region is deepening, with the confirmed death toll from the earthquakes now exceeding 2,205.

The people of Kunar Province are facing a dire situation, with their homes and livelihoods destroyed and limited access to aid. The international community is urged to provide support and resources to help those affected by these devastating earthquakes.
