CDU Leaders Pay a Confidential Visit to Point Alpha
In a recent visit to the historical site of Point Alpha, the General Secretaries of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Hesse and Thuringia, Leopold Born and Niklas Waßmann, expressed their intentions to promote increased visits from school classes to the site.
Located near the former border between West and East Germany, Point Alpha has significant historical importance for the region. School classes from Hesse and Thuringia make up a large part of the visitors at the site, and the CDU General Secretaries see this as a valuable asset for educational purposes, especially for young people.
During their visit, the General Secretaries were guided through the permanent exhibition in the border house at Point Alpha by the Point Alpha Foundation's board member, Philipp Metzler. They were joined by Martin Henkel, a CDU member, Thuringian state parliament member, former mayor of Geisa, and foundation council member, who shared his experiences growing up near the restricted area and border installations.
Both Born and Waßmann emphasized the importance of simplifying school class visits in the politics of both states, and saw potential for improvement. They aim to foster greater awareness and appreciation of Point Alpha's historical significance among young people, and they intend to advocate for this in their respective government coalitions.
The political education and museum aspects of Point Alpha made a strong impression on the General Secretaries, who concluded that the site is essential for educational work. They expressed a desire for more people, particularly young people and young adults, to experience history on site at Point Alpha.
The General Secretaries also acknowledged an imbalance in the distribution of school class visits between western and eastern regions. They plan to address this imbalance in their future political agendas, viewing educational work at Point Alpha as a crucial part of their efforts.
Philipp Metzler stated that educational work is an essential part of the Point Alpha Foundation's work, and he welcomed the General Secretaries' interest and support. The visit to Point Alpha by Leopold Born and Niklas Waßmann marks a significant step in promoting increased awareness and appreciation of this important historical site among young people and policymakers.
