Celebrating a Decade of the Pocket Operator: Teenage Engineering's Portable Synthesizer Range

Ten years ago, Teenage Engineering introduced the Pocket Operator (PO) series, a line of pocket-sized synthesizers that have since gained a cult following. With nearly a million units sold, the PO series continues to maintain its allure and collectability.

The journey began with the PO-10, the first model in the series, introduced at NAMM in 2015. The PO-10, with its low power LCD screen, instant accessibility, built-in speaker, and crunchy sound, was intriguing and inspiring. The design of its LCD screen was inspired by lo-fi synth design and early pocket LCD screen games, specifically Nintendo's Game & Watch series. Gunpei Yokoi, who also had a hand in the Gameboy, oversaw the design of the PO-10's LCD screen.

The PO series devices can be synced together thanks to a unique connectivity system, turning them into a portable pocket studio. More POs followed the introduction of the PO-10, with Teenage Engineering focusing on creating a versatile and compact music-making tool.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, Teenage Engineering has created an exclusive Anniversary microsite. This microsite features historical footage, development information, and a competition for Pocket Operator experts. The winner of the #PO10DIY contest will receive a complete set of the Pocket Operator range, while the runner up will receive the cult Teenage Engineering PO-80 Record Factory.

Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator range has earned a cult status, and their coloured silicon cases are a testament to this. One of the models that started the PO series, the PO-12 rhythm, is now available for $49. Even the costliest Pocket Operator still comes in under $100, making it an affordable choice for music enthusiasts.

The anniversary celebrations also include a call to subscribe to Teenage Engineering's newsletter. Subscribers can expect daily inspiration, escapism, and design stories. Teenage Engineering's website and social media handles are Teenage.Engineering and @teenageengineering respectively.

As the Pocket Operator series continues to evolve, it shows no sign of going anywhere. With its unique design, affordable price, and versatile functionality, the Pocket Operator range remains a popular choice for musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
