Celebrating Youth Day: Grasping Political Insights - Shouldering Responsibilities

Regensburg, Germany - The Regensburg Youth District Council held its latest meeting at the County Administration Office on July 23, 2025, where key decisions were made and updates were provided on various district-related topics.

County Commissioner Tanja Schweiger, who emphasized the importance of promoting political involvement among young people, presided over the meeting. The gathering was attended by representatives from 15 schools, including Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium, Albrecht-Altdorfer-Gymnasium, and Gymnasium Lappersdorf, among others.

The agenda focused on student transportation, digital initiatives, and youth engagement on social media platforms. Harald Hillebrand, head of the Department of Digitalization, spoke about the county's progress in digital administration, positioning Regensburg as a leader in digitalization.

The discussion on social media engagement highlighted the importance of direct feedback from young people. It was revealed that the majority of young people prefer Instagram and WhatsApp as their social media channels, and a fact-based presence on TikTok is deemed desirable. To achieve this, the Guidelines International Network (GIN) was suggested as the institution to implement a presence on TikTok.

Other notable decisions included the approval of a proposal by Timo Heizmann and Emily Grüll from the Special Pedagogical Support Center Regenstauf to install smoke detectors in all school toilets. The lack of a break area at the Gymnasium Lappersdorf due to ongoing construction measures was also addressed, with a possible expansion of the leisure areas currently being examined.

County Commissioner Tanja Schweiger also provided an update on the status of proposals submitted at the last Youth District Council meeting in December 2024. All accepted proposals are either implemented directly by the County Administration Office or forwarded to the County Council or the responsible institution.

The next session of the Youth District Council is expected to take place the week before Christmas. All important information about the Youth District Council, including meeting dates and contact details, can be found on the homepage of Regensburg District under Youth District Council / Our Organization. The Youth District Council, established in 2016, aims to introduce young people to district-related topics and give them a voice in district politics. The committee holds two meetings annually - traditionally in the summer and just before the Christmas holidays.

In 2025, the committee held two meetings, demonstrating its commitment to fostering dialogue between young people and the district administration. Deputy County Commissioner Maria Scharfenberg and County Commissioner Irmgard Sauerer also participated in the meeting.
