Celebratory Memorial Day event unfolding at the city's municipal museum, offering an engaging schedule of activities
On September 14, 2025, the Municipal Museum of Göttingen invites you to a day of discovery and learning as part of the Day of Open Heritage. From 11:00 to 18:00, visitors can explore the city's rich history, architecture, and archaeology.
The day's programme includes thematic tours that delve into various aspects of Göttingen's past. At 11:00, the tour "City. Power. Faith" takes a closer look at central objects of Göttingen's city history in the 16th century. At 12:00, the museum garden will be presented as a living ensemble of building and garden monuments in the tour "City History in the Forecourt".
For those interested in war history, a tour titled "Violence, War, and Unrest. Göttingen in Transition" at 14:00 discusses historical war events during the Thirty Years' War and their pictorial tradition. The tour "Göttingen's historic Old Town - Center and Identity Factor" is offered on two dates: 11:00 and 14:00, providing a comprehensive overview of the city's historic centre.
For those intrigued by religious art, the tours at 16:00, "Religion in the Incarnation of Female Figures", and at 17:00, "From Hardenberg Court to the Posthalterei", feature religious female figures in the medieval art of the museum and the building and usage history of the museum ensemble in Göttingen, respectively. Lastly, at 15:00, "Archaeological Finds Tell History(ies)" explores findings and insights from the museum building's renovation in 2017.
