Cellular phone plans tend to experience a considerable increase in cost following a period of 24 months.

In a recent evaluation by comparison portal Verivox, it has been found that price increases are affecting postpaid mobile tariffs for private customers, even those with monthly cancellable contracts.

The evaluation compared the regular monthly basic fees of 225 different tariffs for the first 24 contract months with the costs demanded in the same tariffs from the 25th month. The results showed that the average increase in regular basic fees after 24 months is 16 euros per month, which corresponds to an average increase of 66 percent. More than one third (40%) of mobile tariffs increase in price after 24 months.

It is important to note that one-time fees and time-limited promotional prices were not considered in the evaluation. The price increases occur across all mobile providers, including discounters, network operators, and in all tariff classes.

Consumers should be aware that these price increases can occur in all contract types. As of December 2021, consumers can cancel telecommunications contracts that automatically renew after the minimum contract term has expired with a one-month notice period.

The specific names of telecommunications providers increasing postpaid mobile tariffs for private customers by more than 40% after the minimum contract term are not explicitly listed in the available sources. However, according to a Verivox analysis, 40 percent of tariffs see such price hikes, with some increases averaging 66%, affecting both major providers and smaller ones alike.
