Celtic Struggle in Champions League Qualifier Against Kairat

Brendan Rodgers' Celtic played a goalless draw in their Champions League qualifier with Kairat, a result that left the Scottish champions disappointed with their first-half performance.

In the opening 45 minutes, Celtic dominated possession, holding 71% of the ball, and made 40 entries into Kairat's final third compared to Kairat's 24. However, they failed to register a shot on target, a stark contrast to their usual attacking prowess.

Alyaksandr Martynovich had a goal ruled out for offside for Kairat in the 11th minute, the closest either team came to scoring in the first half. Celtic also had 12 corners compared to Kairat's 4, but their attempts were often lacklustre, with connections not quite there to get them through the middle.

Rodgers echoed the sentiments of his players, stating that Celtic were too slow and too passive in the first half. The manager also mentioned that the team wasn't moving as a unit as they would like.

The second half saw an improvement from Celtic, but they couldn't find a breakthrough. Alistair Johnston was stretched off with a serious injury before half-time, a blow to the Scottish side's chances.

Despite the disappointing result, Rodgers acknowledged that they are in their current position and need to accept it, without dwelling on it. He expressed his desire to welcome new faces into his squad for the European campaign, stating that the club needs to get the very best players to perform and excite supporters.

So far, Celtic have made six signings, including a loan deal for Manchester City youngster Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Nordsjaelland's Benjamin Nygren. The responsibility for these transfer activities lies with the club's management and those "upstairs," who work alongside the manager and coaching staff; all parties are accountable for transfer decisions and the quality of the squad. The club acknowledges the need to replace lost quality as quickly as possible during the transfer window.

Celtic Park rang with boos at the full-time whistle, a clear indication of the fans' dissatisfaction with the team's performance. Rodgers will be hoping for a better showing in the return leg, as Celtic look to progress to the group stages of the Champions League.
