Charity organization Habitat For Humanity unveils initiative to boost development of Pope Leo Village venture in Covington

In a remarkable move to address the shortage of affordable housing in Northern Kentucky, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati has announced the launch of the Pope Leo Village campaign. The initiative, inspired by Pope Leo's vision and commitment to serve others, aims to bring together youth, neighbors, homebuyers, and the wider Greater Cincinnati community.

The campaign will centre on the construction of nine homes in the Botany Hills neighbourhood of Covington, over the next 18 months. This project aligns with Northern Kentucky's strategies to address the 'missing middle housing', a term used to describe a range of mid-density housing options that are often priced out of the market.

The Pope Leo Village was first launched in Chicago, the Pope's original hometown. In Covington, the Diocese of Covington has initiated the campaign, with financial support coming from partnerships such as Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati. An anonymous donor has provided critical initial support for the construction of the nine Botany Hills Covington homes.

Public funding for a portion of the construction costs did not come through, but Habitat decided to proceed with the build to address the pressing need for affordable homes in the area. Habitat homebuyers will work alongside staff and volunteers to build their homes and will purchase their home with a 0% interest affordable mortgage that is at or below 30% of their income.

Catholic schools and faith communities are invited to join in the building endeavor of the Pope Leo Village. Anyone moved by the new U.S.-born pope is welcomed and encouraged to serve others through the Pope Leo Village campaign by donating, fundraising, or volunteering. More information on the Pope Leo Village campaign is available at habitatcincinnati.org.

Habitat Greater Cincinnati is investing in strengthening neighbourhoods with the construction of the Botany Hills homes. The goal of the Pope Leo Village is to inspire and activate young people and neighbours in Greater Cincinnati to volunteer and financially support Habitat for Humanity. The construction of these homes is not just about providing affordable housing, but about building relationships and creating opportunities for a brighter future for all.
