Weather Forecast for Spain and the Canary Islands
Spain and the Canary Islands are bracing themselves for a heatwave this week, with temperatures expected to soar to 36-38 degrees Celsius in most parts of the Peninsula. Some islands may even reach 38 degrees.
Clear skies with evolving cloud cover are predicted for Andalusia, particularly in the eastern interior mountains. Catalonia will see evolving cloud cover in the afternoon, with isolated showers in its eastern part. Madrid will experience evolving clouds in the mountains, while some low clouds may form in the north of the Canary Islands and in the afternoon in zones of both mesetas and mountains in the center, north, and east of the Peninsula.
In the north of Galicia and regions of Cantabria, cloudy skies and occasional drizzle are expected, with a tendency to become increasingly clear. Some isolated storms cannot be ruled out in Extremadura.
Winds will be light and variable across much of Spain, including Extremadura, Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Valencia, Balearic Islands, and Andalusia. However, moderate to strong trade winds will blow in the Canary Islands, and northeast winds in the northwest of Galicia, where very strong gusts are possible. Breezes will be present on the southwestern coasts of the mountainous islands in the Canary Islands, and coastal breezes in the Balearic Islands.
Temperatures will increase slightly to moderately in most of the country, with more pronounced increases in the high areas of the Canary Islands and the eastern and southern third of the Peninsula, and in the minimum temperatures in the northeast. Minimum temperatures will rise in the western half of Aragón, Navarre, La Rioja, Catalonia, Castile-La Mancha, and Valencia, while remaining unchanged or decreasing in the rest.
Maximum temperature decreases are expected in Galicia, Cantabrian region, and the Ebro valley. Some isolated showers may occur in the southeast of Teruel in the afternoon. Increasing low cloud cover in the west at night is predicted for La Rioja.
On Thursday, temperatures on the Iberian Peninsula’s autonomous communities are expected to be high, with Spain experiencing a heatwave. Intense sunshine may cause isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the Betic mountain range area with possible strong gusts. In Portugal, temperatures will range from 16 °C in the morning to 26 °C midday and 19-22 °C in the evening, and rain is expected during the night.
The heatwave comes as Spain faces very hot and dry conditions, with ongoing wildfires, especially in northern and central regions. Portugal is also battling multiple fires but with slightly improving conditions. The Canary Islands will see low clouds in the northern mountainous islands, morning intervals in the north and west of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and light dust in higher levels.
Stay safe and hydrated during this hot spell, and keep an eye on local weather updates for any changes in conditions or warnings of wildfires.
