Chelsea suffered a streak of losses due to the season-opening injury of its summer recruit
Chelsea Brace for Lengthy Absence of Nkunku and Fofana
Chelsea Football Club has been hit by a double injury blow, with French duo Christopher Nkunku and Wesley Fofana set to miss substantial parts of the 2023 season.
Nkunku, who joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig this summer for a transfer fee of €60 million, underwent surgery for a meniscus injury and is expected to return to the pitch in late September 2025. The Athletic reports that he will not return to group training until at least four months after surgery.
Meanwhile, fellow Frenchman Wesley Fofana has suffered a knee ligament rupture and is expected to be out for at least six months. His anticipated return to action is slated for early October 2025.
The injuries to Nkunku and Fofana have left a gaping hole in Chelsea's squad, particularly in the attacking and defensive lines respectively. To fill the void, Chelsea had to sign Axel Disasi from Monaco as a replacement for Fofana.
Despite the setbacks, Nkunku's contract with Chelsea runs until the summer of 2029, providing a glimmer of hope for the London-based club. The 25-year-old forward has not played a single official match for Chelsea yet, but his potential is undeniable.
This is not the only injury affecting Chelsea players before the start of the new season. The club will be hoping for a swift recovery for both Nkunku and Fofana, as they look to mount a challenge for honours in the upcoming campaign.
