The 2025-2026 Premier League season kicked off with a heated encounter between Chelsea and Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The game was overshadowed by a series of contentious refereeing calls, with the performance of referee Robert Jones and VAR official Michael Salisbury becoming the main topic of post-match conversation.

Marco Silva's men dominated much of the opening period, but a controversial foul by Muniz on Trevoh Chalobah disrupted Fulham's momentum. Josh King's goal for Fulham was disallowed due to this foul in the build-up, leaving Fulham's players and supporters frustrated.

The referee for the match, Robert Jones, penalised Ryan Sessegnon for handball inside the box, leading to Enzo Fernandez's successful penalty and Chelsea's opening goal. The VAR official, Michael Salisbury, was later stood down from the next match following the controversy.

Despite Fulham's dominant first half, Chelsea doubled their advantage after the break. Joao Pedro, Chelsea striker, scored his fifth goal in five starts across all competitions, heading in Enzo Fernandez's corner on the stroke of half-time.

Fulham thought they had taken the lead in the 21st minute but the goal was disallowed. The second half saw Chelsea maintaining their lead, with no further goals scored. The win was much-needed for Mauricio Pochettino's side ahead of the international break.

The game ended with a 2-0 victory for Chelsea, sealing a much-needed win for the Blues. Enzo Fernandez's penalty proved to be the deciding factor in the contest, securing all three points for Chelsea.

Despite the controversial refereeing decisions, the focus now shifts to the international break, where many of the players will represent their respective countries. The next Premier League action will resume after the break, with both teams looking to build on their respective results.
