Chicago prepares for intensified immigration patrols amidst resistance from local administrators against Trump's policy
In a series of developments, several US cities are bracing for increased immigration enforcement, with Chicago being a key focus.
Tom Homan, Trump's former border czar, announced that there would be "action" in most sanctuary cities this week. The exact details of the operation are yet to be disclosed, but it's understood that up to 300 ICE agents are expected in Chicago this weekend.
On Friday, ICE launched an immigration enforcement operation in Boston, dubbed Patriot 2.0. The leadership of this additional operation and the official start date have not been explicitly identified. The operation is meant to target "the worst of the worst" in Massachusetts.
The DHS spokesperson stated that if an individual comes to the US illegally and breaks the laws, they will be hunted down, arrested, deported, and will not be allowed to return. The enforcement is targeting the "worst of the worst" criminals.
President Donald Trump shared an image on his social media platform that insinuated he was going to take action against Chicago, a city he has repeatedly singled out as he has mulled sending the National Guard to other major American cities. Chicago Mayor, Johnson, criticized Trump's threats as beneath the honor of the nation.
Illinois Governor, Pritzker, accused Trump of threatening to go to war with Chicago, while the White House spokeswoman criticized Illinois leaders in response to their criticism of Trump.
Meanwhile, in unrelated news, two winning tickets for the $1.8B Powerball jackpot were sold in Missouri and Texas.
Elsewhere, Hawaii is under a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Kiko, but there has been no mention of the hurricane in the current immigration enforcement discussions.
Amidst these developments, El Grito Chicago, the city's festival for Mexican Independence Day, postponed the event citing ICE activity. Chicago is bracing for expanded ICE enforcement over the weekend, with Pritzker pushing back on the Trump administration's involvement in the city.
On a positive note, Trump has repeatedly stated that he prefers cities ask for his administration's assistance. However, the exact nature of this assistance remains to be seen in the coming days.
