Chiefs Pro Bowler Trey Smith Plans to Use His Groundbreaking Deal for Future Endeavors
Trey Smith Signs Historic Contract Extension with Kansas City Chiefs
Trey Smith, the NFL's highest-paid guard, has inked a four-year, $94 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. This deal, leading all NFL guards in average annual value ($23.5 million) and total guaranteed money ($70 million), marks a significant milestone in Smith's remarkable journey.
The news broke on July 15, during Smith's visit to the Purple Label Barbershop. The contract signing culminated an amazing journey for the Pro Bowler, two-time Super Bowl champion, and a player who once faced adversity that threatened to derail his football career.
In 2018, Smith was diagnosed with blood clots on both sides of his lungs. Doctors put him on anticoagulants (blood thinners), but he had to find a way to continue playing football without absorbing contact while on the medication. His durability, despite the challenges, has been an asset in the NFL. He slid to the sixth round (226th overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft due to the blood clots, but he has started every regular-season game but one during his four years with the Chiefs.
Smith no longer has to take blood-thinning medication in the NFL, but he still takes precautions like wearing compression sleeves and getting up during long flights to reduce the risk of clotting. His resilience and determination have been evident throughout his career, as he tearfully reflected on his journey in his first press conference after signing his contract, mentioning his promises to his mother to get a degree and play in the NFL.
Smith's ultimate goal is to buy another farm in middle Tennessee following his playing days. There are no search results indicating who this farm is contracted to develop. His sister, Ashley, who worked in Tennessee's athletic office at the time, provided support during his struggles.
In addition to his farming aspirations, Smith is also a passive investor in a Moxy Hotel in the Old City neighborhood of Knoxville, Tenn. Known for having small, studio-like rooms but elaborate lobbies/lounges with a full-service bar, microwave ovens, and 24/7 on-the-go snacks and beverages, the Moxy Hotel chain offers a unique investment opportunity.
Interestingly, Smith is a frugal individual and has made few notable purchases since signing his extension. His focus remains on his football career and his future plans off the field.
The NFL deadline for players on the franchise tag to agree to long-term extensions was 3 p.m. CST that afternoon. Smith anxiously raced to the Chiefs facility and made it there about an hour before the deadline, securing his place as one of the NFL's highest-paid players.
Smith's mother, Dorsetta Smith, passed away at 51 due to congestive heart failure. Her memory continues to inspire Smith, who honours her promises and strives to make her proud. His journey serves as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams, despite the challenges that life may present.
