China calls for solidarity among allies in countering 'power manipulation' strategies - China Advocates Aligned Stance Among Allies Against Dominant Diplomacy Tactics
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional alliance composed of ten states, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, and others, convened in Tianjin, China, for a summit on September 24, 2023.
The summit aimed to demonstrate strength and unity as a counterbalance to Western alliances. Chinese President and Party Chief Xi Jinping called for more solidarity among members, emphasizing China's call for cooperation between states.
Xi Jinping pledged 2 billion yuan (around $239.5 million) in aid for SCO members, urging the rejection of a Cold War mentality, bloc confrontations, and harassment. He highlighted the SCO's achievements, including cooperation against terrorism and investments in industry.
Xi Jinping held individual meetings with leaders of over 20 participating countries and SCO representatives, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres. One of the key meetings was with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which the long-standing border dispute between India and China was addressed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was also in attendance, staying in China for several days to attend a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan in World War II and bilateral Russian-Chinese negotiations. Putin will also be attending a military parade in Beijing.
The SCO summit also saw Putin walking hand in hand through the conference hall with Modi, signifying the alignment of India with Beijing due to the strained relationship of many states with the USA in the dispute over tariffs.
Kim Jong Un was also present during Putin's visit in China. Xi Jinping stated that the world is experiencing changes not seen in a century, with increasing instability and uncertainty. He emphasized that the SCO should live up to its responsibility for peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region.
The SCO members planned to sign a joint statement at the summit, further solidifying their commitment to unity and cooperation. The organisation, dominated by leaders of authoritarian systems criticized internationally for human rights abuses, continues to strive for a "multipolar world order" as advocated by Xi and Putin.
