Citizens' Questions Directed to Bundestag Candidates in Düsseldorf-Süd
In a bid to promote political diversity and encourage active participation in democratic processes, a panel discussion was held at the Kulturhaus Süd in Düsseldorf's south. The event, titled "Democratic Dialogue on Site", attracted nearly 200 citizens who came to hear six Bundestag candidates discuss their political positions.
Under the moderation of an unnamed host, the discussion lasted for over two hours and saw the participation of Dr. Lida Azarnoosh (FDP), Adis Selimi (SPD), Sara Nanni (Alliance 90/The Greens), Hannes Draeger representing the ill Lisa Schubert (The Left), Frances Noltekuhlemann (VOLT), and Johannes Winkel (CDU).
On the topic of migration, Adis Selimi (SPD) criticized the automatic scapegoating of migrants and suggested that the CDU should move towards the center. He praised the engagement of the Children's Parliament and advocated for the federal government to provide the financial resources to better equip schools, to which children have a right.
Sara Nanni (Greens) emphasized the importance of children's rights and good equipment for sports and leisure facilities. She pointed out that pension reform cannot be achieved in the short term but many pensioners have been helped by the possibility of receiving housing benefit.
Regarding climate protection, Germany is achieving its climate goals, but high greenhouse gases in the transport and building sectors are a concern. Dr. Lida Azarnoosh (FDP) and Adis Selimi (SPD) participated in a discussion about migration, pensions, and other topics. The FDP sees debt freedom as a high good, while the SPD advocates for the stronger taxation of the rich, the introduction of the wealth tax, and the reform of the inheritance tax to finance necessary investments.
There is disagreement among the parties about the relationship between the CDU and the AfD. However, all candidates agreed that uniform standards for the Abitur should be a goal to ensure the comparability of the qualifications.
The event was organized by the Bürger-Interessengemeinschaft Garath e.V. and the Heimatverein Garather Jonges 1969 e.V., who received great thanks for their efforts. During the discussion, Hannifa, a member of the Garather Children's Parliament, asked the first question about what the candidates planned to do for children. Momo, a student, brought up the topic of pensions, observing elderly people collecting bottles.
Frances Noltekuhlemann from VOLT spoke in favor of a change in the Dublin procedure and the necessity of more integration. Hannes Draeger (The Left) called for more money for schools and daycare centers and less for weapons, and emphasized the goal of combating child poverty.
The panel discussion offered a valuable opportunity for citizens in Garath and the surrounding area to engage with the candidates and discuss the issues that matter most to them. The event aimed to illuminate the political positions of the candidates, and it certainly achieved that goal.
