Decatur City Commission Approves Multiple Changes

The Decatur City Commission has been busy making several significant decisions in recent weeks, affecting various aspects of the city's infrastructure and services.

Oakhurst Pool Heater Repaired

The city commission has given the green light for the emergency repair of the heater at Oakhurst Pool. The pool, which is typically maintained at 84 degrees, is a vital facility for therapy sessions, swim lessons, swim team practices, and general lap swimming. Unfortunately, the heater recently failed, dropping the water temperature to 76 degrees, making it unsuitable for therapy programs or swim lessons.

New Vehicles for Solid Waste Collection

In an effort to address maintenance costs that have become excessive, the commission has approved the purchase of four Kubota vehicles for solid waste collection. These vehicles, expected to cost around $170,000, will replace vehicles purchased in 2020 and are considered the best available for the required configuration. The commission has also approved financing the purchase through the Georgia Municipal Association.

Speed Limit Reductions

As part of the Decatur Safe Streets Safety Action Plan, the commission has approved the reduction of speed limits on several roads. The speed limit on Scott Boulevard will be reduced from 40 mph to 35 mph, and on other roads from 35 mph to 30 mph. This move is aimed at reducing severe and fatal crashes, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. Lower speed limits are expected to enhance safety by reducing stopping distances, improving driver reaction times, and increasing the survivability of crashes.

The roads affected by these changes include Scott Boulevard, College Avenue, South Candler Street, Clairemont Avenue, and a portion of Commerce Drive. It's worth noting that the Atlanta Department of Transportation approved these changes in September.

New Handguns for the Police Department

The Decatur City Commission has also approved the purchase of 57 handguns and related equipment for the police department from GT Distributors Inc. for $55,600. This decision comes as the police department is replacing its current handguns, which have reached their 10-year-old life cycle.

Alcoholic Beverage License for Roaring Social

Lastly, the commission has approved an alcoholic beverage license for Roaring Social, allowing the consumption of beer, wine, and distilled liquors on the premises.
