City of Newport to take control of Purple People Bridge, ensuring its continued operation as a treasured monument.

In the heart of Newport, a significant milestone is on the horizon. After a successful 20-year partnership, the Purple People Bridge is set to be transitioned from the Purple People Bridge Company to the City of Newport on September 10.

The bridge, a beloved iconic landmark, has connected communities across the Ohio River for over 150 years, and today, approximately 700,000 people cross it each year, making it the most utilized recreational trail in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Just over two decades ago, the bridge's future was uncertain due to its condition and capacity to serve vehicular traffic. However, in 2005, the City of Newport and Southbank Partners formed the Purple People Bridge Company with a shared vision to protect and preserve this historic structure. The company transformed the bridge into a signature destination for residents and visitors, nationally recognised as one of the most pedestrian-friendly bridges in the country.

The City of Newport expresses its gratitude towards Southbank Partners for their commitment to the Purple People Bridge Company. The city recognises and values Southbank's continued vision, leadership, and commitment to economic development in the city.

The collaboration between the City of Newport and Southbank Partners is ongoing, focusing on transformational projects in the city. The transfer of the Southbank Shuttle to TANK was done for its long-term sustainability and expansion of the route to serve the Northern Kentucky river cities.

The City of Newport is committed to the Purple People Bridge's future and expects to secure resources for its preservation, enhancement, and potential maximization with Southbank's continued support. The ongoing needs as public infrastructure require continued maintenance and investment.

The transition of the Purple People Bridge is another example of Southbank's legacy of bringing vision to reality for transformational projects with partnering cities. The City of Newport, Southbank Partners, and other regional partners will work together to secure resources for the Purple People Bridge.

The bridge has become both a cultural landmark and a vital people connector. The City of Newport states that the Purple People Bridge's future is firmly committed. The city looks forward to continuing its partnership with Southbank Partners and other regional partners in ensuring the bridge's continued success.
