City of Pico Rivera Receives Premium Energy Efficiency Recognition - First Platinum Energy Action Award

Pico Rivera, a thriving community situated on the eastern edge of the Los Angeles basin and the southern edge of the San Gabriel Valley, has made significant strides in its journey towards environmental excellence. The city has recently been awarded the Platinum Energy Action Award from the Gateway Cities Council of Governments, marking a significant milestone in its efforts.

The Platinum Award recognizes Pico Rivera's leadership in improving energy efficiency and sustainability. Pico Rivera is the first city to receive the Platinum Award in the Gateway Cities Energy Action Awards, outshining 27 other cities within the region.

The award was given to Pico Rivera by the SolSmart program, a national designation recognizing cities and counties that have taken significant steps to address local solar energy barriers and expand access to solar energy. Pico Rivera has also earned the Solsmart Gold Designation for solar energy leadership.

The Pico Rivera Innovative Municipal Energy (PRIME) program, a locally-run, not-for-profit, public energy service created and operated by the City of Pico Rivera, played a significant role in securing the Platinum Award. The PRIME program offers affordable solar energy and battery storage systems to local residents and businesses, making it easier for the community to contribute to the city's sustainability efforts.

The PRIME program was launched through the partnership with the California Choice Energy Authority (CalChoice). In September 2021, the City of Pico Rivera was also recognised with the John Todd Award by the California Contract Cities Association (CCCA), acknowledging its successful partnership with CalChoice in launching PRIME.

City Manager, Steve Carmona, expressed pride in the award, attributing it to the hard work of the City Council, residents, and local businesses. He emphasised that Pico Rivera's journey towards environmental excellence is ongoing, and the community's support is encouraged to drive meaningful change.
