City prioritizes safety by allowing trees to grow along the wall

The Greifswalder Wall Promenade is currently undergoing extensive tree care work, marking the first time that all trees along the promenade are being cared for simultaneously. This extensive project includes approximately 700 trees, not just along the promenade, but also in Crendor Park and Goethegrund.

The tree care work is being conducted as a 'moving worksite', resulting in minor restrictions. Despite this, the Wall Promenade remains accessible throughout the process. The city asks for understanding regarding the ongoing work, as it is being carried out to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

A specialized tree care service, Forstbetrieb Heydenholz GmbH, has been commissioned by the authorities responsible for urban greenery to perform the work. The city has allocated around 140,000 euros for the project.

The inspections carried out by the city's tree inspectors revealed that many trees were in urgent need of care. The work primarily involves gentle pruning, clearing paths and roads, removing dead wood, and eliminating suckers at the base. Around 20 old trees will have their crown safety systems replaced or adjusted to stabilize heavy or damaged branches.

No trees are being felled at this time. The tree care is being conducted in an environmentally friendly manner, considering occupied bird nests. The need for removal of trees showing signs of damage such as fungal infection or decay is still being assessed by external experts.

The city aims to retain as many trees as possible, as this pruning keeps the trees healthy and prevents uncontrolled branch breakage. The tree care at the Greifswalder Mauerpromenade is performed to maintain the beauty and safety of this popular urban space.
