City's earlier troubles resurface in loss to Tottenham, as they fail to maintain control of the game
Manchester City Suffer 2-0 Defeat at Home Against Tottenham
Manchester City's run of four consecutive Premier League titles came to an end last season, and their campaign started on a disappointing note as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Tottenham on Saturday.
Tottenham, under their new manager Thomas Frank, made a perfect start after two league games, with Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha scoring just before half-time. The goals came from a high-line that City have struggled to defend this season, a problem that Pep Guardiola still needs to address.
City fell to defeat with a whimper and could have been further punished on the counter-attack. Trafford, who had a day to forget in goal for City, made several mistakes throughout the game, including an intercepted pass that led to Palhinja's goal.
Erling Haaland had a chance to reduce City's deficit but headed over in the first half, summing up a tough afternoon for the striker. Guardiola is facing defensive issues and needs to decide on his number one goalkeeper, with reports suggesting that Ederson is on the verge of joining Turkish giants Galatasaray.
City's high-line was exposed in an embarrassing early exit from the Club World Cup against Saudi side Al-Hilal last month, and it was once again a weakness against Tottenham. Omar Marmoush started for City, while Rodri was on the bench.
Tottenham rarely looked in danger of losing their two-goal lead against City. Trafford made good saves to deny Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert in stoppage time, but it was not enough to salvage a point for City. Marmoush had City's best chance but was denied by Guglielmo Vicario.
Haaland wasted another opportunity to gain a foothold in the game by overhitting a pass to Rayan Cherki. City lost composure before half-time, with Trafford's mistakes contributing to their defeat.
Spurs have taken maximum points from their opening two Premier League games without conceding a goal. The victory sees them take the top spot in the Premier League table, while City will need to improve significantly if they are to challenge for the title this season.
In the last 13 Premier League meetings between City and Tottenham, City have won only four, so it was a surprising result for many. However, it is clear that City have work to do if they are to regain their form and challenge for the title once again.
