Controversy over Music Festival in Jamel:Campino opposes the District Administrator in stance against right-wing extremism at the event. - Clash between Campino and Landrat over a music festival in Jamel, focusing on political opposition
In the picturesque village of Jamel, located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the annual "Jamel rocks the Förster" music festival took place this weekend, attracting approximately 3,500 music enthusiasts. The event, originally initiated in 2007 by Birgit and Horst Lohmeyer to counter right-wing extremist harassment, has become a significant cultural event in the region.
This year, the festival made headlines for a different reason. For the first time, it was registered as a political gathering, meaning the assembly law applies. This decision was made in response to increased scrutiny and bureaucratic regulations from the Nordwestmecklenburg county, which led the festival association to take legal action.
The controversy began when Campino, the frontman of Die Toten Hosen, one of the festival's headlining acts in 2015, criticized local CDU groups for cozying up to the AfD party. Specifically, he named CDU county commissioner Tino Schomann, the Landrat of Nordwestmecklenburg, as one of the local CDU officials criticized.
Schomann defended himself against Campino's criticism, stating that the statements were a targeted discrediting of state action. The CDU state leadership also sharply criticized an Instagram post by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern representation in Berlin, which criticized the new bureaucratic regulations from the Nordwestmecklenburg county.
Despite the political controversy, the festival proceeded peacefully as expected, according to the police. The lineup of the festival remained secret until just before the performances, as it has in previous years. Other acts at the weekend included Paula Hartmann, Betterov, Dota, and Hinterlandgang, in addition to Die Toten Hosen and Kraftklub.
Campino expressed concern about a general euphoria of victory in AfD and far-right circles, emphasizing the festival's relevance in the current political climate. He criticized the CDU for not doing enough to counter right-wing extremism and for cozying up to the AfD party.
In 2015, one of the Lohmeyers' barns was set on fire by unknown perpetrators, which underscores the significance of the festival in the community and the challenges it faces. Despite the challenges, the festival continues to be a beacon of hope and resistance against right-wing extremism in Jamel.
