In the heart of Cologne, Germany, a peaceful protest against militarization and war took an unexpected turn on Tuesday night. Approximately 3,000 people, part of the "Disarm Rheinmetall" coalition, gathered to voice their concerns about the country's arms industry and military policies. However, the demonstration turned violent, leading to a series of confrontations between the protesters and the police.
The clashes began when a hardcore group of protesters, some masked and armed with smoke bombs, repeatedly violated assembly laws and attacked officers. This led to a halt of the rally in the evening, as police clashed with the protesters to maintain order.
Twelve officers were injured during the chaos, four of whom had to leave duty. The nature of the injuries sustained by both the protesters and officers remains unclear. A spokesperson for the protesters reported injuries as well, with estimates suggesting between 40 to 60 individuals were injured and not allowed into the hospital. Some protesters also accused the police of holding them without provisions.
In response to these allegations, a police spokesperson stated, "Medical aid is certainly provided where it is needed." The police also countered claims about the lack of facilities, asserting that drinks and mobile toilets were available.
As the situation escalated, the Cologne police detained a group from which the attacks originated. The group, it was later revealed, is known as "Disarm Rheinmetall," the same coalition leading the protest. In an accompanying vehicle, pyrotechnics, flammable liquid, and gas cylinders were found.
To investigate the incidents at the demonstration, the responsible authority is the Cologne police. Police used tear gas and batons to prevent further attacks and several people were taken into custody. The status of the individuals detained is not currently known.
