Collaboration between TU Hamburg and Weiss Technik for eco-friendly battery production
The Hamburgische Investitions- und FΓΆrderbank (IFB Hamburg) is backing a groundbreaking initiative to develop an innovative process for sustainable battery production, dubbed the "EcoBat" project. This joint research venture between the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and Weiss Technik aims to create an extremely dry production atmosphere for lithium-ion batteries, potentially reducing energy consumption by up to 77% and CO2 emissions by around 106,000 tonnes per year.
IFB Hamburg, the central point of contact for funding offers from the city of Hamburg, the federal government, and the EU, is providing β¬579,000 for the project. Weiss Technik, on the other hand, is investing approximately β¬1 million. The demonstration and research facility will be realized on Weiss Technik's site in cooperation with TUHH.
The high-temperature heat pump for efficient air drying within the "EcoBat" project is being developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT. This technology is crucial in achieving the project's goal of creating a dry production atmosphere, thereby significantly reducing the environmental impact of battery production.
The "EcoBat" project is just one of many initiatives that IFB Hamburg is supporting. The organisation's activities are not limited to this project alone; it also backs other projects such as Northvolt's battery gigafactory and Aurubis' battery recycling pilot plant. IFB Hamburg's support extends to various sectors, including e-mobility, as demonstrated by its involvement in Aurubis' battery recycling project.
IFB Hamburg's efforts are contributing to Hamburg's development as a centre for advanced battery technologies, among other industries. The United Nations University Hub has been established at TU Hamburg, indicating IFB Hamburg's role in supporting academic and research initiatives. Furthermore, IFB Hamburg's funding includes the "Profi Umwelt Transfer" program, which supports projects like "EcoBat" for the next three years.
