Collapse of Bridge in Iraq Leaves Two Dead; Emergency Response Underway
In a shocking turn of events, a bridge collapse occurred on the main Karbala-Baghdad road late on Saturday. The incident, which took place in a location frequented by Shiite pilgrims from other countries, resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and left at least six people injured.
The collapse occurred when the pillars of the bridge gave way while several vehicles were passing underneath. The scene was chaotic as the bridge came crashing down, leading to a 13-hour-long rescue operation to recover the victims and attend to the injured.
Seven people were fortunate enough to be rescued from the debris, but the rescue efforts were not enough to save everyone. Two bodies were recovered from the collapsed bridge, and the identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.
Among the injured were individuals from Syria and Afghanistan, highlighting the international nature of the tragedy. The injured were promptly transported to a hospital in Karbala for medical attention.
This unfortunate incident is not an isolated occurrence in Iraq. The construction sector in the country has been plagued by numerous accidents and fires, often due to the neglect of safety standards. The construction and infrastructure projects, including new bridges, are on the rise in Baghdad, but the safety of these projects remains a significant concern.
At the time of writing, there are no search results indicating which authority or company is involved in the construction of the collapsed bridge section in southern Iraq that caused the casualties on Saturday evening.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety standards in construction projects to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and the injured during this difficult time.
