Colorado Allocates Almost $1 Million to Minimize Human-Bear Encounters
Headline: Colorado Parks and Wildlife Announces Funding for Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Measures in Larimer County
In an effort to promote coexistence between families and wildlife, Governor Jared Polis and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) have announced the distribution of $999,837 in 2025 for the Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant program. This funding will support various projects across Colorado, including several in Larimer County.
Travis Long, CPW's Grant Manager, emphasized the importance of collaboration in human-bear conflict measures. He underscored the need for residents and visitors to adopt BearWise practices, such as securing trash, removing attractants, and educating neighbours.
One of the recipients of the funding is Larimer County Open Space, which will install new bear-resistant trash cans at sites with high potential for human-bear interaction. The organisation received $30,000 for this initiative.
Continental North HOA and Davis Ranch HOA in Larimer County are also recipients of funding. Continental North HOA received $29,000 for replacing residential trash carts with bear-resistant versions, while Davis Ranch HOA received $16,000 for securing trash and recycling at a community sorting station.
The grant program supports 22 projects statewide, including communities in Northern Colorado. Other projects include bear-resistant trash enclosures, new public receptacles, education programs, and enforcement measures.
Governor Polis stated that these investments aim to allow families and wildlife to coexist safely. He encouraged residents and visitors to visit CPW's BearWise website (cpw.state.co.us/living-bears) for more information on living safely in bear country.
It's important to note that human-bear conflicts are often traced back to human behaviour. By adopting BearWise practices and supporting initiatives like those funded by the Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant program, we can help reduce these conflicts and ensure a safer environment for everyone.
