Commemorating 9/11 Anniversary | Insights into this Year's Ceremony Happening in Lower Manhattan
Annual 9/11 Memorial Service and Tribute in Light to Take Place on September 11, 2025
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the annual memorial service for the victims of the 9/11 attacks will take place at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan. The ceremony will honour the nearly 3,000 people murdered on September 11, 2001, including hundreds of first responders who died in their heroic efforts to save people at the doomed Twin Towers.
The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by a citywide moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 bombing will begin reading the names of all victims after the moment of silence ends.
The Tribute in Light will be set up in Lower Manhattan and can be viewed from the 9/11 Memorial Plaza. This iconic tribute will include sky blue lighting on various buildings and structures across the city, with One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, The Oculus, the Bank of America Tower, the JFK Air Traffic Control Tower, and bridges around the region participating. The Tribute in Light will be visible in the Manhattan skyline starting at sunset on September 11, 2025, and will remain illuminated throughout the night until fading away at dawn on September 12.
Family members can access the Memorial Plaza beginning at 7:30 a.m., and the commemoration is expected to conclude at approximately 1 p.m. Family members can access the museum as early as 8 a.m., with the last permitted entry at 7 p.m. The museum advises family members to make reservations in advance before visiting, and admission is free for family members. The invitation and/or letter received in August, as well as P and T case numbers or Memorial Park identification cards, will serve as family members' credentials for admittance to the ceremony.
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum is partnering with the New York City Tourism + Conventions to extend the Tribute in Light to include rooftops and facades across the city. Houses of worship across the city are expected to toll their bells at 8:46 a.m.
To reserve museum tickets for the annual memorial service, visit visit.911memorial.org. During the ceremony, the names of all 2,983 victims inscribed on the memorial will be read aloud. The reading will pause at five moments marking the tragic attack sequence: 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.
Let us remember and honour the lives lost on this tragic day, and let us continue to strive for unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
