Commemorative event today in Eisenach: Reading of the "incinerated books" on September 6, 1925.
On the 6th of September, 2025, Grandmas Against the Right Eisenach/Wartburgkreis will be hosting a significant memorial event in the heart of Eisenach, on Market 22. The event, titled "Reading of Burned Books," aims to remind us of the importance of freedom of speech, tolerance, and a vibrant democratic culture.
This poignant event symbolises the attempt to erase critical thinking, democratic values, and cultural diversity, as it recites texts by writers whose works were defamed and burned by the National Socialists in 1933. Among the authors whose works will be recited is Else Lasker-SchΓΌler, a significant voice in German literature, and one who had a close friendship with Avital Ben Chorin, a pioneer of Jewish-Christian dialogue.
The "Reading of Burned Books" event is not only a tribute to these silenced writers but also a visible sign against exclusion, working towards the promotion of an open, democratic society. All interested parties are welcome to attend this moving event, which will run from 12:00 to 13:30.
This memorial event promises to be a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting democratic values, freedom of speech, and tolerance. It serves as a call to action for everyone to stand against intolerance and exclusion, and to uphold the principles of a vibrant democratic culture.
