Commencement of building the Greifswalder theatre
Greifswald Theater Renovation Project Commences
The long-awaited renovation of the Greifswald Theater has finally begun this week, marking a significant milestone in the city's urban development. This project, one of the largest in the city, is expected to take a decade to complete, with a projected finish date in 2030.
The architectural firm LH Architekten has been entrusted with the redesign and renovation of the over 100-year-old theater building. The aim is to bring it up to modern standards in structure, fire protection, technical equipment, energy concept, and room layout.
The city's urban development special fund "Innenstadt and Fleischervorstadt" is financing the project, with additional funds provided by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The state is contributing around 22 million euros from the federal and state urban development funding programs.
The old annexes, dating back to the 1950s and 1970s, will be demolished. This will include hazardous material remediation before the demolition work commences. The old building's foundations will also be reinforced with underpinning to prevent settling during construction.
Excavation of the building pit and development of new water, sewage, and electricity lines will follow. The old annexes will be replaced by a modern new building.
The total construction costs for the Greifswald Theater renovation project are currently budgeted at approximately 76.6 million euros. The old building will be brought up to modern standards, ensuring its continued use and enjoyment for future generations.
Construction work will be carried out on the site, which has been cleared and set up, with the goal of preserving the historic charm of the theater while incorporating modern amenities. The Greifswald Theater renovation project is an exciting development for the city and a testament to its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
