Commencement of Comprehensive Apple Health Investigation Today in the Research Application

Apple has announced the launch of a new holistic health study called the Apple Health Study, available in the Research app. This groundbreaking study aims to understand how technology, including iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods, can improve physical health, mental health, and overall wellbeing.

Conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women's Hospital, a leading research hospital and a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, the Apple Health Study is a longitudinal, virtual study that spans a number of health and disease areas. These include activity, aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, mobility, neurologic health, respiratory health, sleep, and more.

The study will explore relationships between various areas of health, such as mental health's impact on heart rate, or how sleep can influence exercise. Early detection of changes in health areas, such as hearing health, could potentially reduce the risk for cognitive decline.

Participants in the Apple Health Study choose which data types they'd like to share with researchers. Apple does not have access to identifying information provided by participants through the Research app. The study aims to help identify changes in health earlier, offering a more proactive approach to health.

The Apple Health Study builds on learnings from previous studies such as the Apple Women's Health Study, the Apple Hearing Study, and the Apple Heart and Movement Study. It is open for enrollment through the Research app version 6.0, available on iPhone models compatible with iOS 16 or later. Participation is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time by the participant, ending future data collection.

The Apple Health Study became available to participants in the United States through the Research app starting in September 2025, coinciding with the Apple Watch Series 11 preorder availability on September 14, 2025, and retail availability from September 19, 2025.

Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple's vice president of Health, stated that the valuable insights gained from previous studies have allowed them to bring innovative new tools to users and surface new insights in areas of health that have long been undervalued. The Apple Health Study is expected to accelerate their understanding of health and technology across the human body, both physically and mentally.

The Research app brings together academic medical institutions, healthcare organizations, and Apple products users for medical research. By joining the Apple Health Study, participants can contribute to medical advancements and potentially help improve their own health and the health of others.
