Community of Minneapolis Annunciation Church confronts post-violence consequences

In the heart of Minneapolis, the Annunciation Catholic Church stands sombre, its stained-glass windows boarded up and adorned with chalked messages of support. The tragedy that struck the community on a recent Sunday morning during the first Mass of the school year has left a profound impact.

Two innocent children lost their lives, and eighteen others were injured, mostly children, in a shooting that has shaken the city. The perpetrator, Robin Westman, formerly known as Robert, was a 23-year-old former classmate of John Lyman, who graduated from the school in 2017.

The church driveway is transformed into a rainbow arc of flowers, a symbol of hope in the face of despair. Therapy animals, including a pig, offer companionship to passersby, providing a touch of comfort in these difficult times.

Parishioners can be seen praying and placing flowers in the expanding memorial, a testament to the resilience of the community. Charlie Lyman, a former student of the school, and John Lyman's son, attended the memorial to show solidarity.

Minnesota state representative Emma Greenman, who has been affected by the shooting as her constituent, is distributing blue ribbons, the school's colours, to the community. She reminisces about another recent tragedy and expresses that while her community is beautiful, there's nothing extraordinary about this tragedy, as it's yet another community learning to come together in grief.

Volunteers, including Sarah Henning and Alex Waterman, are slicing blue and green tablecloths into strips for the ribbons, a small action that has a significant impact in bringing the community together. Waterman cuts ribbons as a way to show support and avoid feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness.

A little girl at the memorial site expressed her sadness about the incident, her small voice echoing the collective sorrow of the community. Georgia Hazel, a parishioner, has been helping to organise the memorial flowers, her efforts a testament to the strength and unity of the community in the face of adversity.

People are sitting in the grass, crying or kneeling in prayer, their emotions raw and palpable. NPR's Liz Baker is reporting from Minneapolis about the shooting, her voice filled with empathy and respect for the community's struggle.

In the face of such tragedy, the community of Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis stands united, their spirits buoyed by the power of hope and the strength of their shared grief.
